Character: Cloche Leythal Pastalia
Age: 17
Canon: Ar tonelico II
Canon Point: After singing Implanta, before heading to the Secret Space (before Phase 4)
Background: Have a couple links
Personality: Cloche is, simply put, a huge bitch, mainly because of her upbringing as the Holy Maiden of the Grand Bell. She has a very haughty, holier-than-thou attitude, and despite if she gets close to some people, it never completely goes away... for the most part. She does try to become nicer and a little less upset over the smallest of things, but it doesn't always help with her attitude. Cloche can be incredibly selfish, but deep down she desires to help people and make their wishes come true. This was especially prevalent when she was younger, and this has only grown in her time growing up: first, she saw how life was in the Pastalia Slums as a small child, and immediately wanted to help them. The other was when she ran to an I.P.D-affected child who had collapsed after setting an inferno to a section of their living areas. She was concerned for the child moreso than herself, despite what her superiors wanted her to do. She has quite a few moments later on in her life that define her want to help others, despite what her outer appearance may say about her.
Cloche is very charismatic; she's comfortable in front of large crowds (or so it seems; this is dependant on what needs to be said and how she's feeling at the time) and can speak publically with little to no outward problems. Cloche is also capable of leadership, as she has been sort of shoved into that position. Upon first meeting, she can have the "I'm looking down on you" attitude, though it could be considered more of a defense mechinism for her- getting too close to people never went well for her before, and she can get scared as to whether or not that person will be taken away from her at any given moment. Cloche has a mean streak about her and likes to insult those that she may dislike, or even when she feels that the person has hardly any brain function. It goes away if the person is persistant enough, or she sees that they have good intentions.
Despite her haughty attitude and charisma, Cloche actually has a ton of self-loathing and is insecure. Inwardly she puts herself down, and whatever she does is never good enough. She really hates herself, but she still tries to please those that have put their faith in her, as seen at the end of the game. Her greatest desire is to create Metafalica for the people of Metafalss, no matter what, even if it seems like she's wanting differently. Cloche is torn on how to go about loving someone, and later in her Cosmosphere it's shown that she needs someone to cling on to, in quite the literal sense, in order for her to feel "safe." She also kind of likes to be bossed around or at least told what to do in some far reaches of her mind.
Considering her upbringing, Cloche is actually very naive when it comes to the outside world and how things work. She's also an absolute professional when it comes to being socially inept, as her upbringing again comes into play and shows that she didn't have a lot of contact with people who weren't advisors or those she worked closely with while in the Grand Bell. Talking with people who would be considered the "peasants" or those not working for the Grand Bell is a bit of a twist for her, since they're more worldly and street-wise than she could ever hope to be. In her own Cosmosphere, she is seen as a Class President type; one who is studious and stern with others when it comes to studying and keeping up ones grades. This carries over into her real life as well. When she DOES bring out her true personality in that particular level, she surprises everyone (whether it's bad or good is sort of up in the air) with how she would normally be if she didn't have to try to conform to the standards she was taught.
Through all of this, Cloche is fond of cute things, which include animals, stuffed animals, and children. She has a hobby of buying collectable things, and is somewhat of a silly otaku (in a sense) that she loves collecting merchandise she deems "cute". There's lots of those. She also has a love for small children, and would give life and limb to make sure they were safe and taken care of. Sasha is the perfect example of this. Before the events of the third game, Cloche frets over Sasha's wellbeing, knowing the land her shop is on will eventually fall, and before Sasha leaves Metafalss with Cocona, she gives her a keepsake to remind her of home.
Cloche is a tsundere type, most definitely. In short, while she absolutely seems like she's not fond of people, the want and need for their approval will always be lurking in her mind, and she'll do anything for that approval, especially if it means friends.
Abilities: Cloche is able to sing Song Magic, which employs emotions to create magic based on what's triggered in her Cosmospheres. Her list of magic is located here. To see them in action: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Replekia. Information on Cosmospheres are here. To note, Cloche will attempt to sing Replekia, but seeing as how there are no I.P.Ds around to help power it, and there's really no way to get a giant floating death laser into Verens, it would likely just be a form of regular Song Magic based out of her emotions at a fraction of the power that it shows if she were in her own world, if that's all right.
Alignment: I have done so much thinking on this, and while I initially thought Elios was the easy out for her, Thras is my final choice for her. While yes, Cloche definitely pings a lot of the emotions covered by Elios, she's ultimately boiled down to Fear and Bravery - she's afraid of letting the people of Metafalss down by not being able to sucessfully sing the Song of Metafalica, but in so many situations she shows her bravery in the face of some of the worst dangers: she draws her (very obviously for ceremony and looks only) rapier to threaten people with it so Luca can escape dangers, and when she insists that she can sing Implanta to save the people from the effects of Hibernation, despite knowing that she's in no condition to do so. If their Maiden isn't brave, who do they look to?

[Despite the plushie task calling to her - and the free plushie for every 100 stuffed was even more of a calling! - Cloche knew that something bad would happen if she even tried that. Crafting anything with any of the people in Metafalss, whether it was clothes or bath soaps or even food? Didn't turn out well at all. Thinking back to the Pepen toy she made for the bath and how it... didn't turn out quite as she had hoped what with it looking rabid with how the soap foamed out of the mouth...
Well! Suffice to say, that wasn't a job she thought she could take. But the one that she figured would be the easiest? The Magical Escape Room, of course! 50 Sylvs wasn't too terrible to pay, and the payout for getting out in an hour was even better. She was positive that could be done, and so straight in she went, blowing off the 'worst fears' aspect. What was her worst fear that they could guess? Water? Falling from a ridiculous height? Pah! It wouldn't faze her in the least.
Or so she thought. Once she was in and she had gone through part of it with scoffs and some mild frustration of the puzzles and the like, she got to the part she thought would be the easiest part of it all: dealing with her "fear." When she entered, it was nothing but black.]
What is this? I'm not afraid of the dark.
[And that's when she heard Croix's voice: "No, but you're afraid of failing the people. Look."
The room lit up to a desolate landscape - a desolate landscape of Metafalss. Scores of people looked at her with scorn and anger in their eyes, some beginning the cries of how useless she was, how empty her promises had been.
That she was a Taboo Maiden, as she had been called before. The False Maiden. Cloche covered her ears and squeezed her eyes shut, shaking her head. The area within the room, reacting to her negative emotions, began to mist up, pattering her head and in a small circle around her with wet cold. The mist was only growing the more she panicked and tried to hide.]
No... no no no! But... but we're looking for the song to sing! Luca has hers, but I... we're trying to find it! Why won't you listen to me?!
[It was getting overwhelming. She felt so small amongst the people yelling for her to be thrown off the side of the land into the Sea of Death below, for her to be locked up in a prison for the rest of her life...
Cloche ran forward to try to escape the crowd, to have some thoughts to herself. She had to face this. This would happen eventually, wouldn't it? If she failed to find her part of the Song she would have a lot of explaining to do. But without everyone else here to back her up, what strength did she have? The more she thought about it, and the more she realized that she never had an issue talking before the people before, why should she have one now? Was it because she was so afraid of people hating her for not fulfilling her promises? To be alone if the support of the people waned?
All of those were what she felt were correct, so... how to face the fear of all that? Slowly she stood, and turned to see the people. Her cries started quietly, but finally she yelled above the crowd to get them to listen, resolve ever encroaching in her shaky voice.]
Please, listen to me! Have you forgotten when I sang Implanta to save everyone from Hibernation? I sang it so everyone would see Metafalica, not just for us to go back to a world we still love but have less and less land! I know... I know we need to drop Mint Block and I... I don't want to do that! But after that, we'll find the Song we need so I can sing with all of my heart for all of you!
[The more she spoke, the more confident she sounded; the foggy mist that had appeared slowly dissipated, turning to a warm summer rain around her - encouraging her to continue to speak her conviction. The faces of the people finally eased and the sound of the crowd became quiet murmurs: can she really do it? Has she let us down before? But she did allow Hibernation to happen... But she's also an I.P.D! She was sick like the rest of them and she still sang!
The chatter grew loud, before few started to cheer her on, the rest following suit after a few moments. To Cloche's surprise the room lit up and the door out was in front of her. It took her a moment to shake off what she had just seen and walk through, but once she did she was met with applause and money shoved at her. It was under an hour, but just barely!
On her way home she couldn't help but think of what she had witnessed. She could only hope she could find that resolve again when she was back home facing that exact thing.]
